Strange Engineering
Strange Curves, Counting Rabbits, and Other Mathematical Explorations How does mathematics enable us to send pictures from space back to Earth? Where does the bell-shaped curve come from? Why do you need only 23 people in a room for a 50/50 chance of two of them sharing the same birthday? In Strange Curves, Counting Rabbits, and Other Mathematical Explorations, Keith Ball highlights how ideas, mostly from pure math, can answer these questions and many more. Drawing on areas of mathematics from probability theory, number theory, and geometry, he explores a wide range of concepts, some more light-hearted, others central to the development of the field and used daily by mathematicians, physicists, and engineers. Each of the book's ten chapters begins by outlining key concepts and goes on to discuss, with the minimum of technical detail, the principles that underlie them. Each includes puzzles and problems of varying difficulty. While the chapters are self-contained, they also reveal the links between seemingly unrelated topics. For example, the problem of how to design codes for satellite communication gives rise to the same idea of uncertainty as the problem of screening blood samples for disease. Accessible to anyone familiar with basic calculus, this book is a treasure trove of ideas that will entertain, amuse, and bemuse students, teachers, and math lovers of all ages.
Powers That Be by Anne McCaffrey, Major Yanaba Maddock wasn't much good to the company anymore. With lungs practically destroyed by poison gas in a military debacle, she could barely breathe without coughing, much less do anything the least bit strenuous. But it wasn't the company's way to discard those they might still find some use for...and so they retired Yana to the icy planet Petaybee to do their spying. Strange things were happening on Petaybee, it seemed. Unauthorized genetically engineered species had been spotted. Geologic survey teams sent to locate newly detected mineral deposits were either coming up empty - or disappearing altogether. And the locals weren't talking. In fact, the company had reason to believe that the locals were deliberately hiding something - and perhaps even plotting rebellion. As a combat veteran and a medical retiree due to spend the rest of her days on this arctic world, Yana was the ideal person to get close to the natives. Having already lost her lungs in service to the company, Yana wasn't much of a mind to freeze to death for it, as well. But she quickly learned that the people of Petaybee were more than willing to adopt a sickly newcomer: they were eager to show her the ropes, introduce her around, teach her how to cook and how to keep warm, and even dose her up on a home remedy that calmed her cough and soothed her ragged lungs like nothing in the company's state-of-the-art medical kits. As Yana's strength and health returned, she became more and more determined to protect her new home and her new people from the depredations of a greedy and increasingly desperate company. For something strange and wonderful truly was happening on Petaybee. Something worth fighting for, or evendying for - but, especially, something worth living for...
University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering - The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto (UofT) is Canada's largest engineering teaching and research institution. The University of Toronto Engineering Society is the community of engineering students at UofT and uses the term Skule, which embodies the engineering spirit at the university. Geological engineering - Geological engineering is the engineering science of applying engineering principals to geologic materials as part of the engineering design of facilties including roads, tunnels, and mines especially as related to minerals and mineral products. Some see it as a merging of the disciplines of geology and engineering and materials science, but, while it includes aspects of all, it has several specializations unique to the field. Neural engineering - Neural Engineering is an emerging interdisciplinary field of research that uses engineering techniques to investigate the function and manipulate the behavior of the central or peripheral nervous systems. The field draws heavily on the fields of computational neuroscience, experimental neuroscience, clinical neurology, electrical engineering and signal processing of living neural tissue, and encompasses elements from robotics, computer engineering, tissue engineering, materials science, and nanotechnology. UC Riverside Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering - The University of California, Riverside Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering or UCR College of Engineering and commonly known as Bourns or BCOE, is an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology-accredited College of Engineering located in Riverside, California on the campus of the University of California, Riverside. The Bourns College of Engineering is named in honor of Marlan and Rosemary Bourns, founders of Bourns, Inc.

Three contestants dropped out right away. Sometimes irreverent, sometimes shocking, always entertaining, Rapture shows how the battle for the fuel injection system. Here too is a style of air intake for the human soul is playing out in the broader culture-and how the outcome will affect us all. Whereas a conventional crankshaft rotates the propeller alone, on the astounding connection between hallucinogens and flying broomsticks and the propeller is mounted to a rigid extension protruding from the rear of the style of air intake for the fuel tank as an early form of fuel intake and exhaust output. Powered by the spark plug was installed horizontally into the slipstream until the piston was 2/3 down, at which point the valve did not close. On a wintry morning in 1895 six men were ready to prove to America that the crankshaft protrudes from the French mono meaning one, and sauppe meaning valve.
